2024 Sermon Theme

2024 Sermon Themes “Living Out God’s Kingdom”
God’s plan for our world has not changed since the moment of creation. God created a world for people to work side-by-side in a community of love. However, humanity rejected that ideal and turned to selfishness. God never gave up. Throughout Scripture, God established a vision of a peaceful kingdom. God’s people continued to turn away, and God continued to love them. From this love came a promise of a future leader who would establish God’s kingdom for
everyone. This Messiah, Jesus, embodied the kingdom of God in his life and ministry. Jesus’ mission led to his death on a cross, but through his sacrifice he triumphed over sin and death. After his resurrection, Jesus commissioned his followers and gave them his Holy Spirit. It was now their work to spread the good news throughout the world, including the promise of the end of death and the final arrival of the kingdom.

God’s Triumph
We do not yet live fully in God’s kingdom, but in a world of selfishness. We see the kingdom breaking through in small ways as people live out God’s vision. But God is in charge and will triumph over evil. Both our suffering and success are only temporary. This message can sound scary, but it is truly a message of hope (Mark 13). The people celebrated this hope when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem (Mark 11). A woman honors Jesus as the Messiah when she anoints him with a costly perfume (Mark 14). Little did the people understand that God’s greatest triumph would come, not through military victory, but through the Messiah’s painful death on a cross (Mark 15). Jesus dreaded this path, but he courageously followed God’s will (Mark 14). This story does not end when Jesus’s body was placed in a tomb. Instead, Jesus triumphs over death itself by rising again and leaving that tomb empty (Mark 16).

This weekend – Easter Sunday – March 30-31, 2024
To prepare for service read Mark 16:1-8
“Resurrection”
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. Mark 16:6

Eggs For Education

Support our sister congregation, Manantiales del Desierto, with Eggs for Education. Public education in El Salvador may be technically free, but for many children, accessing quality education is far from easy. From hidden costs to financial barriers, numerous challenges hinder their educational journey, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting their potential. Beyond tuition fees, families often grapple with additional expenses such as uniforms, transportation, supplies, and extracurricular fees. These seemingly minor costs can quickly add up, becoming significant obstacles for…

Together In Mission (Holy Cross Edition)

At Holy Cross, we are committed to antiracism and understand that it requires more than just words. It is a journey of self-reflection, education, and action. Recently, we organized our own “Together in Mission,” facilitated by Dr. Joyce Caldwell and Pastor Marilyn Miller. Our leadership, staff, and teams came together to assess our congregation’s identity and stance on antiracism. This learning process involved role-playing, discussions, and introspection, and we engaged in planning how our teams will help lead this work.…

Loneliness and Social Isolation Linked to Serious Health Conditions

Loneliness and social isolation in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States and putting them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions. A report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) points out that more than one-third of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely, and nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.1 Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness…
